Invocation:
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God, and the Communion of the Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen
Confession and Absolution
We come before you, our Loving Father, Mother God, confessing most of all our need of you.
We confess that we have not always acknowledged just how much we depend on you.
We confess that we have not always loved you with all our heart, soul and mind.
We have not always loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We ask that you will forgive us and grant us your strength to conform more fully to your loving will for us.
We pray in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Amen.
In obedience to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, it is my privilege to declare to you and to myself, the entire
forgiveness of all our sins.
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen
Prayer of the Day
Let us pray.
Amen
First Lesson: 1 Samuel 3: 1 - 20 (NRSV)
1 Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under E'li. The word of the LORD was rare in those days;
visions were not widespread.
2 At that time E'li, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room;
3 the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was.
4 Then the LORD called, "Samuel! Samuel!" and he said, "Here I am!"
5 and ran to E'li, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call; lie down again."
So he went and lay down.
6 The LORD called again, "Samuel!" Samuel got up and went to E'li, and said, "Here I am, for you called me."
But he said, "I did not call, my son; lie down again."
7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.
8 The LORD called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to E'li, and said, "Here I am, for you called me."
Then E'li perceived that the LORD was calling the boy.
9 Therefore E'li said to Samuel, "Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say,
"Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10 Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, "Samuel! Samuel!"
And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
11 Then the LORD said to Samuel,
"See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle.
12 On that day I will fulfill against E'li all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end.
13 For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever,
for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them.
14 Therefore I swear to the house of E'li that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be expiated
by sacrifice or offering forever."
15 Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD.
Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to E'li.
16 But E'li called Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son." He said, "Here I am."
17 E'li said, "What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me.
May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you."
18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him.
Then he said, "It is the LORD; let him do what seems good to him."
19 As Samuel grew up, the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.
20 And all Israel from Dan to Be'er-she'ba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the LORD.
Here ends the First Lesson
Psalm 40: 1, 3, 6 - 9 (NRSV)
1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the LORD.
6 Sacrifice and offering you do not desire,
but you have given me an open ear.
Burnt offering and sin offering
you have not required.
7 Then I said, "Here I am;
in the scroll of the book it is written of me.
8 I delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart."
9 I have told the glad news of deliverance
in the great congregation;
see, I have not restrained my lips,
as you know, O LORD.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 6: 12 - 20 (NRSV)
12 "All things are lawful for me," but not all things are beneficial.
"All things are lawful for me," but I will not be dominated by anything.
13 "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food," and God will destroy both one and the other.
The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.
14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power.
15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?
Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never!
16 Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her?
For it is said, "The two shall be one flesh."
17 But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.
18 Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself.
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God,
and that you are not your own?
20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.
Here ends the Second Lesson.
Gospel Lesson: John 1: 35 - 42 (NRSV)
35 The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples,
36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!"
37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
38 When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?"
They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?"
39 He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day.
It was about four o'clock in the afternoon.
40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
41 He first found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Anointed).
42 He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Ce'phas"
(which is translated Peter).
Here end the Readings from Holy Scripture.
- Sermon -
Jesus shows Himself and makes Himself known!
That is the theme of the whole Epiphany season, from now until Ash Wednesday.
All our lessons for the next month or so
will give us new and different perspectives on the ways that our Lord is reveals Himself to us.
Our First Lesson is about the patriarchal prophet Samuel,
the very man of God who would anoint David as God's chosen king over Israel and Judah.
In our lesson, God makes Himself known to Samuel while Samuel was still a young boy,
by means of a voice that speaks to him in the night.
Many of God's people have heard Him speak in the night,
whether in a dream
or in that alpha brain state that lies somewhere between sleep and full wakefulness.
Sometimes it can be hard to know whether we have really heard God's voice
or just thought we had heard Him.
It can even be difficult to know whether the voice came from God
or from the inside of our own minds.
For us Christians, there is a simple test:
Does the voice we think is from God say to us the loving things that we know our Lord Jesus Christ says?
Is it consistent with what we know of Him?
If so, the voice may well be from God.
If not, we can know for certain that it is not from God.
Samuel faced the same problem:
He thought his teacher and prophet, Eli, was calling him.
Three times he went to the teacher and said, "Here I am, for you called me."
At the third time, Eli realized that the Lord was calling Samuel, and he told Samuel what to do.
When God called, Samuel said, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening."
It's a really good idea to say something like that to God in our prayers and meditations.
It's been a standing joke through most of my ministry
that our prayers more often say to God,
"Listen, Lord, for your servant is speaking."
I think that is probably true for most of us in our prayer lives,
and then we complain that God does not answer our prayers.
In truth, God often does speak to us,
but we are too busy doing and saying many things
rather than listening for God's messages to us.
Keeping in mind that God's word to you and me will always lift us up and affirm us as His children,
we can safely pay much closer attention to what He has to say than we usually do.
Naturally, we need to remember that God's message to us
will also lift up and affirm the people around us as His children,
even if we may find it difficult to understand how He can do so for some of them!
Our Second Lesson contains a poignant reminder that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.
God created our bodies as a part of our whole being,
and even though they do not always cooperate with us,
they are worthy of our respect as a creation of God,
not for us to abuse or indulge to excess,
but as an important part of our spirituality
as well as the expression our physical nature.
If we keep in mind that our bodies are spiritual, too, and that we will have spiritual bodies in the world to come,
our bodies and their needs today
are much less likely to keep getting us and themselves into trouble!
In the Gospel lesson for today,
we learn how our Lord revealed Himself
to some of the first of His disciples.
They had been followers of St. John the Baptist,
and John directed them to Jesus,
calling Him the Lamb of God.
So our Gospel for this week and the church's liturgy call Jesus the Lamb of God.
That has so many layers of meaning that we cannot begin even to list them all,
but it means that Christ is the innocent sacrifice for the sin of the world.
God did not and does not demand an offering for sin, but we do.
We will not be satisified until the demands of justice are met.
So God has taken upon Himself the ultimate consequence of our sin,
and taking it up into Himself, He has overcome it.
The mission of the anointed one of God, the Messiah, the Christ,
was to come to live and die as one of us
to bring us back into God's family
in spite of the separation that led us astray,
the separation that we call sin.
God is not and cannot be content
to live forever separated from the least and worst of us.
Christ is the eternal revelation of the loving heart of God our creator,
and in human form He called disciples
so that they could tell everyone about Him
and about the love of God
that He made known.
Christ is still calling disciples today in much the same way
and for much the same reason.
He wants us to share and to show the love of God
as it has been made known in our hearts,
affirming us as His beloved children,
where we are and as we are.
The Lamb of God is infinitely more than a sacrifice for sin.
The Lamb of God is the Son of God
Who wants to make us all his sisters and brothers,
children of the same loving Heavenly Father.
Our Hymn for this week is a great contemporary song by Twila Paris, "Lamb of God" ...
1. Your only Son, no sin to hide, but you have sent him from your side
to walk upon this guilty sod and to become the Lamb of God.
Chorus: O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God,
Oh wash me in your precious blood, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.
2. Your gift of love we crucified. We laughed and scorned him as he died.
The humble king we named a fraud and sacrificed the Lamb of God.
Chorus: O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God,
Oh wash me in your precious blood, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.
3. I was so lost, I should have died, but you have brought me to your side
to be led by your staff and rod and to be called a lamb of God.
Chorus: O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God,
Oh wash me in your precious blood, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.
Amen.
Prayer of the People
Please type your spontaneous petitions in chat.
Each prepared petition is intended to remind us of the things we need to pray about,
so a brief pause will be provided for us to pray our own petitions,
either sharing them in the chat window
or praying them in our own hearts.
Loving God, we pray for each other, for those who depend upon us for prayer, and for all people according to their needs.
We ask that your healing power may prevail in our lives.
We pray that those in positions of public trust may be worthy of that trust as they act as stewards of power and wealth
for the benefit of all.
We pray that conflicts may be resolved in the context of relationships,
so that violence of thought word and deed may be diminished all through our world.
We ask your blessing for all who bear witness to the Gospel, so that relationships with you may be deepened for all people.
All these things, and whatever else you see that we need, we ask that you will grant for the sake of your Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ, in Whose name we pray.
Amen.
Our Lord's Prayer
Our Father Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the Kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever and ever,
Amen.
Benediction
May the Lord bless us and keep us.
May the Lord make His face to shine upon us and be gracious to us.
May the Lord lift up His countenance upon us, and give us peace.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen +
